Visiting Sedona

I am visiting Sedona, Arizona. It is a beautiful place and people are friendly if not a bit touristy. The red rocks are impressive and seem from another time and place. I noticed a theme developing with those who have settled here: everything is energized with spiritual energies because of the existence of special vortexes of energy. These vortexes are said to connect people to higher energies. I do notice the connection with nature being more intense here as the beauty if overwhelming, but the kind of spiritual frenzy that people profess and attribute to Sedona is really in their imagination. What I mean is that most of the people have this spacey head energy where everything is spiritual and truth is relative. So anything goes and everyone has God in them, which happens to be the truth, but only a few have any idea what that means much less have any experience of God within. God seems as conceptual and misconceived as any opinion on the latest fashion or popular new age method of knowing something. What I saw was a boatload of opinions and almost no real experience of God. Sorry to deflate the great balloon of the ego, but living somewhere does not have anything to do with being spiritual. Genetically descending from a biological line has absolutely nothing to do with being spiritual. Knowing some jargon and having some superlative words or all-inclusive pseudo-true words makes absolutely no difference in reality to whether you have any real spiritual experience or not. Psychics are advertised on many store fronts and psychic readings are going on in almost every little shopping plaza. They pretend to be reading your soul, but are actually reading your astrology chart or your aura. Some of them are quite good at what they do, but most are fairly untransformed beings themselves that know almost nothing about God or themselves. I am not talking about anybody personally, but I wanted to mention the flavor or spirituality in Sedona. There is not real substance to it at all. There is a whole lot of talk and a great deal of spaced-out mind, but almost no real backbone of courageous spiritual connection with God at the center of our being. Talk is cheap when you can attribute spirituality to some hill or mountain or grouping of red folds of rock. But inner spiritual work is hardly being done anywhere regardless of the location on the planet. It is rare.

May the Light of Love illuminate my words! I agree that talk is cheap. There is no end to the New Age mumbo-jumbo available online, in the bookstores, and in certain locations like Sedona. Still…I have a close friend that is really into astrology and she has demonstrated some phenomena that I cannot rationally explain. I remain open-minded about the arts of the occult even though I agree they are not about serious “inner spiritual work.” But I cannot agree with a sweeping dismissal of spirituality in “some hill or mountain or grouping of red folds of rock.” I had my first mystical experience at age fourteen when standing atop Mt. Shasta with my father. I had my next mystical experience at age twenty-five, when my father and I climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro. For me, getting close to nature has been an integral part of my mystical experiences. My ultimate experience of the Oneness at age forty-five was directly the result of sitting down next to a flowing stream and silently turning my focus completely inward. Love can be found in the silence of nature. Now when I want to do some serious “inner spiritual work,” I visit the Japanese Garden in Portland, my hometown. Even Jesus sought out the Garden of Gethsemane for prayer.

dear father bowes, Ive been following your work since I discovered your web site a year ago.I am the gentleman who passed the measage through rev.Margrett in feb. regarding your wonderful music.Anyway,I just read your latest blog,,sedona,,and I just had to comment.since my union experience 4 years ago,I began looking into the mystical traditions for confermation and so on only to find a real mess.I now emagine spiritual seekers today lost on a huge ocean of nehilistic relativism, unable to see the golden shore of gods simple love in there hearts nor the incredible very real intimacy relationship possible that god makes one whole and compleat through.I feel sad,I feel angry,I often feel confused as to why{or how}the teachers of mystical paths can perpetuate this poison with silence.I cant thank you enouph for having such courage to tell the truth,,ALL PATHS DO NOT END AT TRUTH,GOD IS NOT A ETHERIAL FORCE BUT A REAL BEING THAT IS IN YOU AND YOU ARE IN,AND ITS POISONOUS TO TAKE SHORT CUTS TO GOD,ITS ALOT OF WORK TO BE INTIMATE,GOD NEEDS US TO FACE ALL THE ISSUES THAT PREVENT THIS,,THATS PAIN,WORK AND PATIENCE,THEN GOD CAN MAKE ONE WHOLE AND COMPLETE.Thank you most of all for restoring my faith in teachers. God bless you .

Dear John
There is a hodge-podge of flaky spirituality out there. Out there is the appropriate description of what most people are doing. It takes some real vertebrae to be on the spiritual path and humbly allow a Teacher to guide the process.
Blessings to you,
In Christ
